May 1 to 5, 2019 – Cancun

Inspired by the Biennial Conferences of the SAA, the Suzuki World Conventions, the conventions in Peru and Mexico, and hundreds of institutes and festivals throughout the Americas, we are pleased to invite you to the 1st Suzuki Convention of the Americas, from May 1st to May 5th, 2019 in Cancun, Mexico.

The Convention will be hosted by the Mexican Suzuki Association and will be assisted by other Suzuki associations of Latin America. The Suzuki Association of the Americas will also play a key role in planning this international event,

The city of Cancun has been chosen for many reasons: it has the necessary infrastructure to hold international conventions in a safe environment; it is geographically convenient being close to the center between North America and South America; there are direct international flights to and from the big cities of North and South America, and the prices are relatively affordable; along with its modern facilities it is home of a very important Mayan historic heritage, as well as flora, fauna and marine landscapes that are among the most beautiful in the world.

We have the responsibility to be agents of peace and understanding through the music of our children. Through our Suzuki communities we hope to tear down barriers, and create a single learning community, aspiring to a closer, more integrated world. Let’s embrace Dr. Suzuki’s ideals, let’s dream together, come help us change the world. We are waiting for you in Cancun!

ORCHESTRAS

Two Student Orchestras: comprised of advanced Suzuki students from the Americas
 
Suzuki students from the Americas who wish to take part in one of the orchestras of the Convention should carefully read the following:

• Two auditioned student orchestras will be featured during the 1st Suzuki Convention of the Americas: Copland Orchestra and Revueltas Orchestra. These orchestras will include strings, guitars, flutes, recorders and piano.

• It is the hope of the convention hosts that Suzuki children from across the Americas will meet, play and learn together in combined Orchestras or Group Experiences at this convention. Therefore there will be no invitations to preexisting ensembles of Suzuki students.

• The minimum levels needed to audition for these orchestras are:
o Violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, guitar, piano and harp: Suzuki Book 4.
o Recorder: Suzuki Book 3.
o Students studying in the latest books, Book 7 and above, or those who have finished all of the books, will play a critical role in these orchestras and are strongly encouraged to audition and participate!                                                   

• All the members of the orchestras must have music reading skills.

• The repertoire will be a selection of works by some of the most relevant composers of the Americas, such as Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, Copland, and others.                                         

• Students to participate in the orchestras will be chosen through recorded auditions.

• The selection of students to participate in the orchestras will be made by an international team of evaluators.

• To audition, please make a video recording of a Suzuki piece, with a minimum difficulty level of Book 4 of your respective instrument (students that have completed all the Suzuki books for their instrument may submit a piece from the traditional concert repertoire). • Please, send your recording with accompaniment, if there is one.

• Please say your name, city and country in your recording.

• Deadline for submitting the video recording: May 1st, 2018.

• Admission results will be sent no later than September 1st, 2018.

• Registration to the Convention will start on September 1st, 2018, and will end on February 1st, 2019.

• Students applying for the orchestras should not register for the Convention before receiving a confirmation of admission on or before September 1st.

• It is expected that approximately 50% of the students in these orchestras will come from Central and South America, and 50% from North America. 

• There are a limited number of seats for the two student orchestras:


a. Violin: 100
b. Viola: 44
c. Cello: 36
d. Double Bass: 16
e. Flute: 12
f. Recorder: 20
g. Guitar: 20
h. Harp: 4
i. Piano: 16



• Auditions will not determine in which section and place in the orchestra the participant will play (i.e., first violins, second stand). Sections and seating will be assigned according to the needs and balance of the orchestras.

• Students that are accepted into the orchestras must commit to carefully prepare the assigned repertoire with their private teacher before the convention.

• The evaluation criteria will be the points on the performance descriptors published by the Suzuki Association of the Americas, enlisted here:1 

(a) Repertoire: technical and interpretive demands of the selection(s) are commensurate with performer’s technical and musical abilities

(b) Physical aspects:

  • Demonstrates balanced, erect posture
  • Demonstrates ease of movement, efficient motion (e.g., no unnecessary tension evident)
  • Appears physically comfortable


(c) Tone production:

  •   Tone is pleasing, resonant and full.
  •   Tone varies when appropriate.
  •   Volume is even but varies when appropriate.
  •   (Strings & Flute) Uses vibrato as appropriate.


(d) Technical accuracy:

  •  Plays correct notes
  •  Intonation is accurate.
  •  Tempo is appropriate.
  •  Musical pulse is steady, yet varies when appropriate (e.g., rubato, ritard).
  •  Rhythm is accurate and precise.
  •  (Harp) Plays without finger buzzes and pedal noise.


(e)  Musicianship:

  •  Dynamics varied to create expressive effect.
  •  Notes are articulated appropriately and consistently.
  •  Creates motion in melodic line (phrase shape, rise and fall)
  •  Phrases end gracefully (e.g., tapered dynamics, ending notes sustained).
  •  Performance is consistent with (within the bounds of) stylistic convention.
  •  Interpretive choices are consistent.
  •  Performance conveys the character of the piece (e.g., march is march-like).

–(Piano, Guitar & Harp) Performance demonstrates voicing of melodic lines and     
  accompaniment.

(f)  Stage presence:

  •   Demonstrates appropriate poise and bearing.
  •   Acknowledges fellow performers (if applicable).
  •   In the event of error, continues without pause.
  •   Bows when appropriate.


(g)  Focus of attention:

  •   Performance conveys sense of concentration.
  •   Performance conveys sense of confidence (little hesitation or timidity evident).





LESSONS

Group lessons for Book 1-3 students: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, recorder and guitar

All Suzuki students who wish to participate in group classes must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently studying Books 1, 2 or 3 at the time of registration (see minimum levels below).
  • No minimum age; maximum age of 18 by May 2019.  
  • Suzuki repertoire memorized and polished.
  • No audition is required but early registration is encouraged.
  • Although the deadline for registration is February 1st, 2019, if the quota of participants has been filled before that date, no additional students will be admitted.
  • At least 50% of the students will come from Central and South American countries.



Violin:

  • Minimum level: Minuet in G major by J.S. Bach (Book 1), at the time of registration.
  • Capacity:
    • 80 students Book 1
    • 60 students Book 2
    • 60 students Book 3


Viola:

  • Minimum level: Minuet in G major by J.S. Bach, at the time of registration.
  • Capacity:
    • 30 students Book 1
    • 30 students Book 2
    • 30 students Book 3


Cello:

  • Minimum level: Happy Farmer, at the time of registration.
  • Capacity:
    • 30 students Book 1
    • 30 students Book 2
    • 30 students Book 3


Double bass:

  • Minimum level: Song of the Wind, at the time of registration.
  • Capacity:
    • 10 students Book 1
    • 10 students Book 2
    • 10 students Book 3


Flute:

  • Minimum level: Long, Long Ago, at the time of registration.
  • Capacity:
    • 30 students Book 1
    • 30 students Book 2
    • 30 students Book 3


Recorder:

  • Minimum level: The Best of Times, at the time of registration.
  • Capacity:
    • 30 students Book 1
    • 30 students Book 2


Guitar:

  • Minimum level: French Folk Song, at the time of registration.
  • Capacity:
    • 30 students Book 1
    • 30 students Book 2
    • 30 students Book 3


Individual lessons for piano and harp:

Piano:   

  • Piano students will take individual classes in work sessions of 2, 3 or 4 students per hour, depending on the level, throughout each day of the Convention.
  • Minimum level: Au Claire de la Lune (hands together by the moment of registration).
  • Capacity:   
    • 25 students Book 1  
    • 25 students Book 2
    • 25 students Book 3

  • Minimum level: Mary had a Little Lamb, by the time of registration.

All students will showcase in a performance the work developed over the course of the Convention.

Concerts dress code for student concerts

Students should have a long-sleeved white shirt and black pants or skirt. One concert outfit will be enough.

Master Concert
A gala concert will be performed by renowned international musicians.


SESSIONS

Key note speakers, panel discussions and Suzuki teachers’ sessions
As Suzuki philosophy is based on the children’s natural learning and the values of respect and love to all people, this is a timeless methodology: it doesn’t change with time.

However, given that technology, communications and many social practices have transformed human and professional relationships in recent years, it is important to reflect on the reaches of the Suzuki teaching from the perspectives of these changes.

The topics of the master lectures and Suzuki teachers’ sessions will be the following:

  1. Music composition and arrangement as teaching tools.
  2. Musical production and technology as a possible extension for Suzuki education: composition and arrangement software, recording engineering for young students, the influence of current musical industry in the Suzuki student and professional musician, etc.
  3. Musical improvisation as pedagogical tools for technical and auditory development.
  4. Expanded contemporary musical languages as additional repertoire: atonal music, polytonality, electronic and electroacoustic music, etc.


All teachers who wish to participate in a panel discussion or plan on presenting a session about any of these four topics should please consider the following aspects:

• Presenters will be chosen by the convention committee for each activity.

CHOIR AND PERCUSSIONS

Students’ Choir
In addition to group classes and individual lessons in their respective instruments, students of Books 1, 2 and 3 will participate in choral practices throughout the course of the Convention.

If voice is your instrument you can participate in one of the Convention’s choirs, whether you take lessons or not in any other instrument.

Percussion workshops for students
Group percussion classes will be offered to all interested students.



TEACHERS

10. Learning and participation opportunities for teachers.
 All Suzuki teachers who attend the Convention will have the opportunity to:

• Observe the orchestras and choir rehearsals.
• Observe the teaching of some of the most experienced Suzuki teachers of the Americas and Europe in group classes and Individual Lessons.
• Attend lectures, panel discussions and sessions.
• Observe demonstrations of Early Childhood Education classes.
• Attend the Master and Student concerts.
• Exchange ideas and make new friends with hundreds of Suzuki teachers from across the Americas.

• Teachers registration has limited capacity of 400
• It is expected that around 50% of the teachers attending the Convention will come from Central and South America, and 50% from North America.
• Registration starts on September 1st, 2018, and the deadline is February 1st, 2019.




REGISTRATION


• Registration for Suzuki students and teachers: $370.00 USD
Includes participation in all activities except admission to Opening Concert and Master Concert.

• Student’s parents, family and friends: $50 USD
Includes observation of all activities except admission to Opening Concert, Master Concert.

• Opening Concert Tickets $10.00 USD (limited capacity to 1,200 people). Students, teachers and parents need tickets.

• Master Concert Tickets $10.00 USD (limited capacity 1,200 people). Students, teachers and parents need tickets.

• Student concerts are free.

• Registration starts on September 1st, 2018, and the deadline is February 1st, 2019.

• Although deadline for registration is on February 1st, 2019 it is important to keep in mind that capacity is limited (as it is pointed out in the various sections of this call) and therefore registration may close before February 1st, 2019.

• Students who wish to participate in any of the orchestras, please do not register before receiving admission confirmation as a result of submitting a video before May 1st, 2018.

• Auditions´ results will be sent to each applicant no later than September 1st, 2018.

For all our participants who need transportation services there is a 1 to 7 seats van: $90.00 USD per unit (round trip); $12.85 USD per person in a full unit.

Other hotels
Attendees to the 1st Suzuki Convention of the Americas also may look for accommodation in other hotels in Cancun, although it is highly recommended to stay at the official site hotel in order to facilitate fluidity and efficiency in the Convention.

• Participants staying at a different hotel are not exempt from paying the Convention’s registration costs.

• By paying the Convention’s registration cost, people who are not staying at the Convention’s official site hotel have the right to participate in all the activities pertaining to the 1st Suzuki Convention of the Americas and to a light lunch at noon, but will not be able to use the recreational areas and facilities of the IBEROSTAR Hotel. However, public beaches adjacent to the hotel may be used by all.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships
It is important to acknowledge that participating in this Convention must be understood as an accomplishment of a Suzuki community that supports, gives shelter and embraces its members.

Therefore, in cases when a student or a teacher lacks sufficient means to attend the Convention, they should turn to their Suzuki learning communities in their areas to jointly implement mechanisms and initiatives to procure the necessary financial resources.

• Scholarships will be awarded only for registration costs. There are no scholarships for accommodation or airfares.

• There will be a scholarships committee to decide which percentage of the scholarship should be granted in each case.

• We deeply appreciate that scholarships be requested only when all other possible instances for financial support in the community or country of origin are exhausted.

• In order to decide the percentage of the scholarship to be granted, the committee will take into account the Human Development Index of the United Nations Development Program, which can be consulted at http://hdr.undp.org/en/countries (look for your country’s “Rank”).

Students coming from countries with lower Human Development Index will be granted a higher percentage of scholarship and vice versa, students coming from countries with very high index will not be offered a scholarship, hoping their financial needs can be covered by their communities.

MORE INFORMATION

Arrival and departure dates
Students participating in the orchestras will start activities on Wednesday May 1st, at 9:00 am and will finish on Sunday May 5th, at 3:00 pm.

All other students will start activities on Thursday May 2nd, at 9:00 am and will end on Sunday May 5th, at 3:00 pm.

All teachers are urged to arrive on the 1st in the morning and depart on the 5th in the afternoon.
